We've rounded up our pick of the best hashtags for sewists, whether you're sewing your own wardrobe or simply stitching for fun.
From tagging the pattern you're working on, to giving a shout out to the type of fabric you’re using (and seeing what others are making with it too), there are loads of ways hashtags can help you connect with other sewists online. Have a look at our round-up of the top sewing hashtags below.
#seamstresslife
Whether you’ve just achieved the rolled hem of your dreams or got out the stitch ripper for what feels like the hundredth time, you can share all aspects of sewing - both the ups and the downs - with other stitchers using the hashtag #seamstresslife or just #seamstress. They're a great way to pick up some new patterns too!
#sewalong
If you’re struggling for inspiration or have pattern blindness and need a good suggestion, a #sewalong is a great way to get making – and a helping hand from others working on the same pattern, too. There are some reallt helpful ones which run every year, such as #miymarch by @dressmakerssocial, #sewphotohop and #bpsewvember by @bimbleandpimble. To discover new ones, simply search #sewalong or #sewingchallenge.
#memadeveryday
The fab #MMMay18 challenge by @sozoblog may have finished, but you can keep in touch with the community with the year-round hashtags #memadeveryday and #memadewardrobe. The idea behind the tags isn’t to make something every day, but to try and wear the items that you’ve made yourself more often and discover where the holes are in your wardrobe are so you make more items you will wear regularly.
#selfishsewing
If you’re always making things for others, celebrate the stitches you do just for yourself with the hashtag #selfishstitching. Whether it’s hiding from your family to get some me-time on your sewing machine or finishing that dress you’ve been meaning to make for ages, show off your handmade wardrobe and admire creations from others.
#sewtogetherforsummer
It’s already underway, but there’s still time to join in with #sewtogetherforsummer and sew a wrap dress with other seamstresses. Run by @sewsarahsmith, @sewing_in_spain and @rocco.sienna, the challenge is to sew a classic wrap dress in whichever pattern or fabric takes your fancy and then share it using the hashtag to win prizes. Sarah explains, “The aim is to encourage sewists of all levels to take part; to share your knowledge with others or take the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques.” There are also lots of discounts to be had, too. To find out more visit www.sewsarahsmith.com
#DIYOOTD
Lots of Instagrammers love showing off their outfit of the day, but give it a handmade twist by sharing your homemade creations with the hashtag #DIYOOTD and see what other stitchers are making too. #diydressmaker is a similar tag filled with people sharing the projects they’re proudest of.
#makeitsewcial
Allison Sadler may have started this hashtag a long time ago, but it has proved so popular that it's still going strong. It's been embraced by the sewing community and picked up a Mollie Makes' Hanmade Award along the way too. Use the tag #makeitsewcial to find likeminded dressmakers to be part of your sewing tribe.
#sewmystyle2018
#SewMyStyle began last year as a way to encourage young women to start sewing, raise awareness of the slow fashion industry movement and to prove that creating your own handmade wardrobe is achievable. The project began in January, but you can still join in as there is a new project for each month of the year from fantastic pattern designers such as Deer & Doe and True Bias. You can reveal your creations on the last Sunday of every month and discount codes are sent out on the 23rd of each month. To find out the schedule visit www.jessicalorraine.com.
#patternmaking
The hashtags #patternmaking and #patterndrafting are for all the dressmakers who love drafting their own designs or can’t resist giving a pattern a bit of a tweak. Use them to get tips on everything from drawing the perfect curves to new tools you can’t live without – and who doesn’t love a bit of haberdashery?
#sewingleftovers
This very small but massively wonderful hashtag encourages you to put your leftovers to good use. Created by Shauni of the Magnificent Thread, #sewingleftovers is a sewing challenge to inspire you to put any extra fabric to good use, with the added bonus of giving you a more cohesive wardrobe of your own creation.
#stitchersofinstagram, #sewersofinstagram and #sewcialist
We’ve grouped these hashtags together because of the similarities between them, although all three are well worth following to find your tribe of sewers. Use #stitchersofinstagram, #sewersofinstagram and #sewcialists for everything from finding out which patterns are popular, to discovering makers with a similar style to you.
#PSimadethis
When people compliment your clothes there’s no better feeling than being able to tell them that you made it yourself on your sewing machine. Share your latest outfit by adding the tag #PSimadethis or #madebyme to show off your work.
#makercapsule
This may only be a tiny hashtag of a few hundred but if you're trying to make your own capsule wardrobe it's the tag for you. From dresses to bags, shirts to skirts, it’s packed with inspiration from other sewists who are making their own small but perfectly formed wardrobes. Use #makercapsule to share how yours is growing too.
#2020makenine
The #2020makenine challenge encourages you to pick nine projects you want to make throughout the year. You don’t have to overload yourself with projects and you can share your progress with the online community. “This is a really simple, really forgiving challenge that allows you to narrow down your focus and work towards some solid goals. Work at your own pace and pick any nine projects you want!” explains Rochelle of Home Row Fiber Co, who created the challenge. It’s not too late to join in either.
#sewistproblems
If your stitch ripper is in your hands a bit too often or that french seam is proving a bit too tricky, share your sewing problems with the hashtag #sewingproblems. It’s not just about any issues you may be having, you can pick some hints and tips too. Find other sewist’s top hacks by using the tags #sewingtips and #askthesewistsofig as well.
#fabricaddict
Let's be honest, all sewists are fabric addicts too - we're always searching out the next piece of cloth to create with. Share your fave fabric finds and discover new patterns being used by other dressmakers with the hashtag #fabricaddict - although be warned, there are some seriously gorgeous fabrics to feed your addiction.
