Quilts are only as good as their fabrics! In order to create a charming, keepsake quilt, you need a selection of gorgeous fabrics to make it with.
This is where the new Arthur’s Garden collection from Liberty comes in. Their latest collection takes heritage designs and reworks them into striking contemporary prints that are a joy to quilt with.
The fabrics in the collection are inspired by founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty’s very own Japanese garden. Each meticulously hand-painted design represents Arthur’s incredible life and, most importantly, his beloved garden.
All the stunning fabrics in this collection are perfect for turning into modern, contemporary quilts. Not only do they feature beautiful designs, but they’re also made from Liberty’s high-quality Lasenby Cotton. The Lasenby Cotton base is made from 100% cotton and weighs 146 grams per square metre, making it very stable and perfect for quilting.
To show you how you can use the Arthur’s Garden collection to create unique quilts, Liberty has shared three modern projects all made with their new fabrics.

Create contemporary quilts with the Arthur’s Garden collection
The Arthur’s Garden collection is full of fabrics that come in both a deep blue and vibrant red colourway. These contrasting colours will create a striking, contemporary look in any quilt.
The playful Ginkgo Spot fabric with its distinct ginkgo leaf pattern pays homage to Arthur’s love of Japanese culture. This print looks beautiful alongside the retro Dali Garden fabric, an eclectic design that gives the effect of hand-carved linocuts.
Both Gingko Spot and Dahlia Garden are available in blue and red colourways and, when quilted together, create a quilt that’s as rich in colour and culture as Arthur’s garden.
Alternatively, the Arthur’s Garden quilt can be made with fabrics like Fluttering Fans and Floral Waterfall which give a more Art Nouveau feel. The blossom-filled waves of Floral Waterfall strike the perfect balance with the multi-directional design of Fluttering Fans, creating a quilt full of movement.
Both versions of the Arthur’s Garden quilt use Charming Chrysanthemums as the backing fabric. This eye-catching pattern gives a subtle nod to the Japanese botanicals in Arthur’s garden, as it’s a print traditionally used to decorate kimonos.
As you sew this contemporary quilt you’ll be transported to Arthur’s tranquil retreat!

Arthur Liberty’s love for his garden is told through each and every fabric in the Arthur’s Garden collection. The bloom-laden trellises, tumbling blossoms, and ancient gingko trees which made his garden so unique are seen throughout the collection.
Intricate fabrics like Daisy Doodle and Patricia Rose can be quilted together to create a contemporary design that tells the story of a garden in full bloom.
Based on artwork found in the Liberty archive, both Daisy Doodle and Patricia Rose feature much-loved flower forms in a new, modern style. When quilted with highly illustrated fabrics like Painted Blossom, you feel like the quilt is bursting with life – just like Arthur’s garden.
Use heritage fabrics to create unique homewares
The Arthur’s Garden collection also features designs inspired by the 1890s.
Based on a woven textile piece from the Liberty archive, Garden Retreat is covered with swirling streams, meandering paths and dahlias in full bloom. This highly detailed fabric showcases the beauty of Japanese and British blooms growing in harmony.
This contemporary cushion also uses fabrics like Blooming Trellis to create a patchwork of colour. This enchanting, chequered fabric combines a variety of design styles to create a fresh feel.
The fabrics from the Arthur’s Garden collection can be turned into a myriad of treasured pieces. From quilts to cushions, these fabrics allow you to create quilted items that are the perfect balance of heritage and modern.
