Who needs shop-bought gift boxes when you can make something much prettier and unique like this Valentine's box using our free template, some ordinary white card and a few embellishments! This type of box is also called a Split Top box, a variation on the popular Clamshell gift box.

Our designer has chosen traditional patterned papers to decorate our box, layering the panels onto some gold card for a luxe look. We've added die-cut letters and a papercraft heart to complete the look, but why not add ribbon or lace details, or even die-cut into the sides of the box to create a sneak peek window. Download your free Split Top Box template to get started!

Here's a top tip: why not take this homemade Valentine's gift box even more special by stashing a few sweets inside. Win extra brownie points by tracking down some of their old favourites!

Once you’ve mastered this heart box template, you can use it for other occasions as it’s a very versatile design. You'll find an alternative heart gift box in our heart template printable set if you want more ideas. And if you're looking for some patterned papers to decorate your box, check out our freebies section. We have lots of free downloads, including these stylish Mackintosh art nouveau papers, or how about these free stationery papers?

How to make a Valentine's box

Step 1

First, download your free split top box template. Cut out the template and cut along the solid cut lines. The dotted lines denote where to fold, so go ahead and score along these dotted lines to help you get a nice, neat fold. Fold up the sides and glue tab A over tab B.

Step 2

Use glue or double-sided tape to secure tab C over the side marked D on the template. Repeat for the other side.

Step 3

Once the tabs are securely glued in place, all you do is fold up the sides to close the box! Decorate the sides with plain or patterned paper to suit the occasion. Add an extra flourish on the top of the box to finish.

We love seeing what you make, so don’t forget to share your craft projects with us on Facebook and Twitter, too!
