While cross stitch comes in a variety of different styles, sizes and designs, we are spoilt for choice in how to display our finished piece, too.

Whether you’re someone who loves showing off their hard work in an ornate frame, or keeping it simple with a hoop, there’s also the opportunity to mount your finished piece in a magnetic hanger.

Using a magnetic poster hanging is a super-easy way to display your finished cross stitch without the expense of a bespoke frame.

Using bare wood can add a rustic charm to your home or you can paint it in complementary colours to really stand out. In this article we show you how to prepare the fabric for hanging and make sure it’s fitted securely.

While the below step-by-step photos show a project by Jenny Barton that has been stitched on evenweave, the same instructions apply when mounting a design stitched on linen, aida and fiddler’s cloth. You’re also able to fray the edges of your aida and once again the same instructions apply.

This magnetic hanging was originally featured in The World of Cross Stitching issue 341 (January 2024).

How to mount your stitching in a magnetic hanger: step by step

Materials you will need

  • Magnetic wooden frame, which you can find from Maries Cross Stitch, Stitchtastic and Lakeside Needlecraft
  • Medium-weight iron-on interfacing from a local craft store
  • Acid-free double-sided tape

Step 1

Iron and trim your finished stitching, remember to leave a 2cm (1in) border all around the outside edges.

Step 2

Cut a piece of medium-weight iron-on interfacing the same size as your stitching, and iron onto the back.

Step 3

Fold back the borders along the side edges of the stitching, using the row of holes as a guide. Use pins to hold in place.

Most hangers will come as plain wooden slats but it's easy to paint them to fit your design or décor. Use acrylic paints and allow them to dry fully before using.

This project is from The World of Cross Stitching issue 323 (Sept 2023), by Emily Peacock. Digital back issues are available via the WOXS app.

Step 4

Iron along the creases – the stiff interfacing helps it stay in position, creating a neat edge.

Step 5

For extra hold in the magnetic hanging frame, you could put a strip of acid-free double-sided tape along the edge of one part of each hanger.

Step 6

Line the hangers up with the top and bottom edges of your stitching and place the other hanger on top, sandwiching the fabric in between. Now it’s ready to hang!

Mount your stitching using magnetic hangers

Using magnetic hangers for your cross stitch isn't as tricky as it appears and it now means you're able to hang up all kinds of designs using ribbon, bakers twine, wire – wherever your creativity takes you!

Also, mounting finished cross stitch projects in magnetic hangers makes for thoughtful gifts for anyone who loves a bit of home décor. Whatever is next on your to-stitch list, finish it off in a splendid hanging instead to add your own personal twist!
