How to attach charms to cross stitch

Using charms in your stitching can add sparkle and make a simple pattern really something special!

Step 1

Most charms have a moulded loop at the top and can be easily attached to your stitching using a single strand of cotton. For a concealed finish, choose a thread that’s the same colour as the fabric or, if you’re adding the charm over the top of a stitched area, match the thread to the cross stitches.

Step 2

Secure the thread at the back of the fabric, then bring it up at the point where you want to attach your charm.

Step 3

Stitch several small, neat stitches over the top of the charm’s loop, while holding the charm in place with your thumb.

Step 4

Finish off by securing the thread at the back and cutting it off neatly.
