Guidelines for submissions

We often get emails from budding designers who are keen to get their work published, so here are some practical tips for those of you are interested in becoming a Love Patchwork & Quilting contributor, but aren't sure how to go about it.

Note: This guide is for individuals wishing to contribute designs for publication. It is not for brands or PR agencies. We do love working with brands though – so please do check out our Working with brands section below.

Know the magazine

It’s really important that before you even start writing your pitch, you know the magazine really well! Love Patchwork & Quilting has a distinctive style which is apparent when you look through an issue – you’ll be able to see what sorts of patterns work for us, how we lay out our copy and what level of quilter we write for. Understanding whether your work is a good fit for our brand is essential and if you’re not sure if your idea would be a good fit for this magazine, do some research – maybe your work would be better suited to one of the other quilting magazines out there?

Plan ahead

All magazines work quite far in advance. We're usually putting together our Christmas edition in the summer (no, really!). At Love Patchwork & Quilting we publish 13 issues a year, and with the huge number of processes that go into every pattern published it’s essential that we work ahead. That means that we are planning each issue at least 6 months in advance. If you are interested in submitting to our January on-sale issue, you would need to submit ideas direct to the Editor by late June.

Write a short overview and provide visuals

Once you are ready to submit your ideas it’s time to get in touch! You can email our Editor (Fiona) directly – Fiona.lawrence@ourmedia.co.uk

Simply introduce yourself and share with us links to your previous work and then write a short paragraph about the ideas you've got. Please take the time to include some basic information, like the techniques involved in a design, what skill level the pattern is suitable for, the finished size of your quilt design, and any thoughts you have about fabric collections or colour palettes.

Visuals are always helpful

If you have created a mood board, a quilt sketch or even sewn a test block, please do share with us!

If at first you don't succeed

Please don't be disheartened if your first design idea is not accepted. Sometimes we may already have a similar design commissioned, or it’s just not the right fit. Do feel free to submit more ideas and hopefully we can find the right thing to work on together.

Working with brands

We love working with great brands that resonate with our readers and have lots of ways in which we can collaborate together. As well as standard advertising slots, we also welcome brands to sponsor a feature which we can tailor to suit each individual project. Adverts will appear in both our print and online editions. We also have opportunities within our blog, newsletter and social media platforms to reach our digital audiences.

We are happy to work with businesses of all sizes, so please get in touch to discuss your budget, the different options we can offer or to simply receive our media kit. Email: emelie.arnold@ourmedia.co.uk
