If you're looking for one of the most satisfying projects that a crocheter can hook up, then it's got to be a classic crochet shawl. Perhaps the best thing about crochet shawl patterns is that they're a satisfying project to get stuck into, but not so big that they become tedious and take forever to finish. As you'd imagine, crochet shawl patterns come in a huge range of shapes and styles, from lacy summer layers to warming winter wraps.

The term shawl usually refers to an item that is wide enough to wrap around your shoulders (and a wrap would be slightly wider still), but the terms shawl, wrap, scarf and stole are all used pretty freely to describe the same items. For example, when something is called a crochet scarf we would generally think of that as a long slim piece of fabric, however if it is a wide scarf then some people would then call it a shawl or wrap.

We've picked 30 of our favourite crochet shawl patterns in a range to suit every ability, from intricate lace designs to relatively simple stitch patterns, with plenty of free crochet shawl patterns included too.

Free lace shawl crochet pattern

Our first free crochet shawl pattern is this elegant design by Simply Crochet editor Sara Huntington. Featuring a beautiful repeating diamond stitch pattern, and hooked up in a silk and wool blend lace yarn, it's so pretty you can wear it over a fancy evening dress for special occasions.

Catch your eye crochet scarf pattern

All eyes will be on you when you show off this crochet scarf. This sculptural design is made in stages - lots of circles are made first, then they're connected to make the eye shapes, before being attached together with a lacy join to create a triangle shawl design. The different pieces and assembly make for an epic project that you'll be super-proud of once you've completed it, and although it looks complicated it actually only uses simple stitches!
