We love a nice quick crochet motif, and this free crochet star pattern is super-quick to hook up!

If you're wondering how to crochet a star, there are a few different ways that it can be done - some crochet star patterns will start off with a pentagon, or be made in granny square style stitches.

However, this handy little crochet star pattern works up in one go without the need to fasten off and rejoin on each point of the star. It's also made up of just 2 rounds - making it one of the simpler ways of how to crochet a star for beginners! We've even got a handy video tutorial below!

We've used a dk yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook to make this free crochet star pattern, but it will work in any weight yarn (just adjust your hook size accordingly). This tutorial is suitable for relative crochet beginners, however to follow this crochet star pattern you will need to know how to crochet in the round.

You will need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook

How to crochet a star

Step 1

To start, chain (ch) 4 and slip stitch (ss) into the first chain to make a ring

Step 2

Round 1 Ch3 (which counts as your first treble crochet stitch), then treble crochet (tr) into the centre of your ring…

Step 3

… work 13 more treble crochet stitches into the ring (so you will have made 14 treble crochet stitches in total plus your starting 3ch). Then ss into the top chain of your starting 3ch to join.

Step 4

Round 2 Now we’re going to start making the points of the star. Start by making 5 chains…

… and double crochet (dc) into the second chain from your hook…

half treble crochet (htr) in the next chain along…

…and work a treble crochet stitch into each of the next 2 chains…

…then to finish the point, skip the next stitch of your round 1 circle and ss into the next 2 sts.

Now to complete round 2, just repeat step 4 four more times to create your 5 points.
