How to make a granny square sweater
There are two basic techniques for making a granny square sweater. The first is by making large granny squares that form each of your garment panels like in this pattern. The second is by joining multiple smaller squares to make your panels.
This granny square sweater is made using four separate large square motifs for the front, back and each sleeve. The squares are worked in rounds with the right side facing throughout.
Each sleeve is a square folded in half and seamed along the underarm. Extra rounds are worked onto the end of the sleeve to lengthen before finally adding a cuff.
The front and back squares are seamed together leaving enough space for the neckline. Sleeves and sides seams are joined, then extra rounds are worked onto the bottom of the jumper to lengthen it.
The measurements given in the sizing table below are a guide to the possible finished sizes of the sweater and the yarn quantities required. You can adjust all of the measurements following the instructions in the pattern.
As each of the panels are formed from a square (with some extensions for sizing), it’s easy to use the measurements as a base for if you want to make your jumper out of multiple smaller squares.
You would simply need to ensure that once your smaller squares are joined they make up to the same size as the single squares in this pattern. Choose your size then find the specific square dimensions in the pattern.
