This free crochet snowman ornament pattern designed by Marianne Rawlins uses colourwork crochet to make the sweet snowman picture, and uses a small amount of toy stuffing to give it a nice squishy thickness, or you could always leave it flat and use it as a cute gift tag!
You will need
Wensleydale Longwool DK (100% wool, 100g/235m) or alternative dk yarn, 1 ball of each:
- Yarn A Pomegranate (425)
- Yarn B Spruce (424)
- Yarn C Natural (401)
- Yarn D Brown (424)
8 Safety eyes, or if you’re missing these, you could replace them for black beads

Decoration measures 15x16cm at the widest points
Notes
Follow the chart on when instructed. Read all RS rows from right to left, and WS rows from left to right. Change colour on the last yrh of the previous stitch. Free Crochet Snowman Ornament Pattern
Tree motif (make 2)
Using Yarn C, ch3.
Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and next ch, turn. [2 sts]
Row 2 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc into next 2 sts, turn. [2 sts]
Row 3 Ch1, 2dc in into next 2 sts, turn. [4 sts]
Rows 4 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn. [4 sts]
Row 5 Ch1, 2dc in first st, dc in each st to last st, 2dc in last st, turn. [6 sts]
Row 6-8 Repeat Row 4-5, ending on a Row 4. [8 dc]
Refer to the chart for colour changes over the next 15 Rows.
Row 9 Repeat Row 5.
Rows 10-25 Repeat Rows 4-5 8 times. [26 dc]
Row 26 Repeat Row 4.
Fasten off.
Join Yarn D into 10th st across.
Row 27 (RS) Ch1, dc into next 8 sts, turn leaving rem 9 sts unworked. [8 dc]
Rows 28-32 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn. [8 dc]
Fasten off and weave in ends.
To make up
Place the eyes between Rows 15 and 16, approx 2 sts apart. Use the remaining safety eyes for the Snowman’s buttons, placing 1 between Rows 19 and 20 and one between Rows 21 and 22. You can use the image as a guide.
Place the Motifs together with WS facing in. Join Yarn A to the bottom right corner, working through the sts on both Motifs.
Round 1 Ch1, (dc in next st or row end, ch1, skip 1 st or row end) around to top of Tree, (dc, ch2, dc) in top of Tree, lightly stuff your decoration as you work around, (dc in next st or row end, ch1, skip 1 st or row end) around, ss to beg dc to join.
Round 2 Ss to first ch-sp, ch2 (counts as htr), 4htr in same sp, *(ss in next ch-sp, 5htr in next ch-sp)** around to ch-2 sp at top of Tree, (ss, ch20, ss) in ch-2 sp), repeat from * to ** around.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
