Cross Stitch

Lay the fingerless mitts flat with the back of the hand uppermost and the top of the mitten towards you. Count 8 sts from the top of the mitten, and using tacking thread, mark out a rectangle which is 16 sts across by 4 rows deep for the right mitten (‘Love’) and 17 sts across by 4 rows deep for the left mitten (‘Hook’).

Cross stitch the words using 4ply yarn, a sharp needle and following the charts (right). On the charts, each square corresponds to one dc stitch on the mitten. Using cream yarn, make a cross stitch over each stitch marked on the chart. There are some stitches where you will need to squeeze a cross stitch into half a dc stitch vertically, and there are stitches on the corners of the letter ‘O’ where you will need to work one diagonal stitch across the whole dc stitch, and the other diagonal across half a dc stitch to meet the full-length diagonal.
