If you're looking for a super-cute Christmas crochet project, then how about this adorable crochet angel pattern by Cara Medus. This free crochet angel pattern has loads of delightful details to keep you entertained, like her intricate gold wings, halo and trumpet. Our crochet angel has a base so that she can be played with as a toy (or you could put a weighted object inside to help her stand up), but we've also included extra instructions i the pattern on how you could transform her into a crochet Christmas tree topper too. You will need

Hayfield Bonus DK (100% acrylic, 100g/280m), or alternative DK yarn, 1 ball of each:

  • Sunflower (978)

DMC Lumina (L3821) gold lurex thread

DMC Colour Infusions gold memory wire (or alternative gold jewellery wire)

Toy stuffing

Black embroidery thread

Black seed beads

PVA glue

Tapestry needle

Standard sewing thread

A 3.5mm crochet hook

A 2.5mm crochet hook

Abbreviations

dc2tog Work two double crochet together as follows: insert hook into st, yarn round hook and draw yarn through, insert hook into next st, yarn round hook and draw yarn through. Yarn round hook and draw through all loops on hook.

Notes

The pattern is worked with a 3.5mm crochet hook unless stated otherwise.

Body

With White, make a crochet magic loop

Round 1 Ch1, 10dc into the loop, ss to the first dc to join. [10 sts]

Round 2 Ch1, 2dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join. [20 sts]

Round 3 Ch1, (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 10 times, ss to first dc to join. [30 sts]

Round 4 Ch1, dc in each st, ss to first dc to join. [30 sts]

Round 5 Ch1, dc in each st worked in the back loop of the sts on the previous row, ss to first dc to join.

If you would like to make your angel so that you can place it on top of your Christmas tree, simply start with ch30 and ss into first ch to form a loop. Then working into each ch, continue from Row 6 and don't stuff.

Round 6 Ch1, dc in each st, ss to first dc to join.

Continue rows of dc as round 5 until base measures 5cm high. Stuffing regularly.

Next round Ch1, (dc2tog, dc in next 3 sts) 6 times, ss to first dc to join. [24 sts]

Next round Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join.

Next round Ch1, (dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts) 4 times, ss to first dc to join. [20 sts]

Next round Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join.

Next round Ch1, (dc2tog, dc in next 3 sts) 4 times, ss to first dc to join. [16 sts]

Next round Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join.

Next round Ch1, (dc2tog, dc in next 2 sts) 4 times, ss to first dc to join. [12 sts]

Next round Ch1, (dc2tog) 6 times, ss to first dc to join. [6 sts]

Make sure the body is stuffed firmly, fasten off and leave a long end to sew up the remaining hole.

Hands and arms

Using Peaches, ch2

Round 1 6dc in second ch from the hook, ss to first dc to join.

Round 2-3 Ch1, dc in each st, ss to first dc to join.

Change to White

Round 4 Ch1, dc in each st around, but do not join - continue working in a spiral without closing off the round with a ss, keep working rows of making a dc into each st until arm measures 6cm.

Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn to use in sewing arm to body.

Make another arm and sew both to the top of the body. Fasten the top of each arm to the body, but also place a couple of stitches on the underside of the arm to join it to the body about 1.5cm from the top of the arm.

Head

Worked from the top of the head down.

Using Peaches, make a crochet magic loop

Round 1 Ch1, 10dc into the loop, ss to first dc to join. [10 sts]

Round 2 Ch1, 2dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join. [20 sts]

Round 3 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join.

Round 4 Repeat round 3.

Rounds 5-8 Ch1, dc in each st, ss to first dc to join.

Round 9 Ch1, (dc2tog, 2 dc) 5 times, ss to first dc to join. [15 sts]

Round 10 Ch1, (dc2tog) 7 times, dc in next st, ss to first dc to join. [8 sts]

Fasten off. Stuff and sew up the remaining hole. Leave the end intact to sew to the body.

Hair

With Sunflower, make a crochet magic loop

Round 1 Ch1, 6dc into the ring, ss to first dc to join. [6 sts]

Round 2 Ch1, 2dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join. [12 sts]

Round 3 Ch1, (2dc in next st, dc in next st) 6 times, ss to first dc to join. [18 sts]

Round 4 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join.

Round 5 Ch1, (2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) 6 times, ss to first dc to join. [24 sts]

Round 6 Ch1, dc in each st around, ss to first dc to join.

Row 7 Ch1, dc in next 16 sts, turn.

Row 8 - 13 Repeat Row 7

Fasten off. Roll the bottom of the hair up slightly and stitch in place, stitch to head.

Wings (make two)

With DMC Color Infusions gold memory wire, Ch6 and ss into first ch to join into a ring.

Row 1 Ch3, 7tr into ring, turn.

Row 2 Ch7, tr in first st (skip st at base of ch), ch3, tr in next, ch3, tr in next, ch3, skip 2 sts, dc in next, ch3, skip 1 st, dc in next st.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Halo

With DMC Color Infusions gold memory wire, ch16 and ss in first ch to join into a ring. Fasten off, weave in ends and attach to the head at one point at the back of the halo so that it ‘stands up’.

Trumpet

Worked with a 2.5mm hook and DMC Lumina gold, ch12.

Row 1 Dc in second ch from hook and each ch along, turn. [11 sts]

Row 2 Ch1, dc in each st along.

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Double a piece of DMC Color Infusions gold wire to the same length as this crochet strip. Twist the two pieces of wire together at either end, but leave a portion in the middle untwisted and with one of the strands pulled out to make a loop. This will form the trumpet handle.

Place this length of twisted wire along the length of the crochet strip and sew up the two long edges of the strip around the wire to make the base of the trumpet, leaving the loop of the handle exposed. Fasten off.

Trumpet bell

Make a make a crochet magic loop,

Round 1 Ch1, 4dc into the loop, ss to first dc to join.

Continue working in a spiral without closing off each round with a ss

Round 1 (2dc in next st, dc in next st) twice. [6 sts]

Rounds 2 & 3 Dc in each st around.

Round 4 (2dc in next, dc in next 2 sts) twice. [8 sts]

Round 5 (2dc in next, dc in next st) 4 times. [12 sts]

Round 6 (2dc in next, dc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]

Round 7 2dc in every st of the round. [36 sts]

Fasten off. Use the long tail end to sew the bell to the base of the trumpet.

Belt

Worked with a 2.5mm hook and DMC Lumina gold. Make a chain approx. 30cm long and work one row of dc along it.

Fasten off and sew in ends. Tie around angel.

To make up

Using Peaches, make several small straight stitches on top of one another to make the nose. Using a strand of black embroidery thread, sew two black seed beads for eyes, and backstitch eyebrows and a mouth. Sew the wings to the back using standard sewing thread, the hand to the trumpet handle and the base of the trumpet to the mouth.
