This adorable baby’s hat, designed by Cara Medus, would be a perfect gift for a newborn. The finished hat measures 18 1⁄4 in (46cm) x 6 1⁄2 in (16.5cm), and we used Rowan Pure Wool.

tr2togPR treble 2 together in the previous row: treble 2 together, but insert the hook at the base of the treble on the previous row and draw the yarn up level with the current row

PATTERN STARTS
Foundation round
Ch 79 using 4.5mm hook and red yarn, ss to join into a ring without twisting the chain.
Using 3.5mm hook:
Round 1 Ch 3, 1 tr in each ch, sl st to top of turning ch. [80 sts]
Round 2 Ch 3, 1 tr in each st.
Round 3 Ch 3, *tr2togPR, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts; rep from * until last 2 sts, 1 tr in each, ss to turning ch.
Round 4 As round 2.
Round 5 Ch 3, 1 tr in next st, *tr2togPR, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts; rep from * until last st, 1 tr, ss to turning ch.
Round 6 As round 2.
Round 7 Ch 3, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, *tr2tog PR, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts; rep from * until last st, tr2togPR.
Round 8 Ch 3, 1 tr in each of next 7 sts, *tr2tog, 1 tr in next 8 sts; rep from * until end. [72 sts]
Round 9 As round 3.
Round 10 Ch 3, tr 6, *tr2tog, tr 7; rep from * until end. [64 sts]
Round 11 As round 5.
Round 12 Ch 3, tr 5, *tr2tog, tr 6; rep from * until end. [56sts]
Round 13 As round 7.
Round 14 Ch 3, tr 4, *tr2tog, tr 5; rep from * until end. [48 sts]
Round 15 As round 3.
Round 16 Ch 3, tr 3, *tr2tog, tr 4; rep from * until end. [40 sts]
Round 17 As round 5. Change to green yarn.
Round 18 Ch 1, 1 dc in each st, ss to to top of turning ch.
Round 19 Ch 1, dc 2 *dc2tog, dc 3; rep from * until end, ss to top of turning ch. [32 sts]
Round 20 As round 18.
Round 21 Ch 1, dc2tog until end, ss to top of turning ch. [16 sts]
Round 22 As round 18.
Round 23 As round 21 [8 sts]. At the end of this round do not ss, but continue working dc in a spiral on these 8 sts to form the stalk. When stalk measures 1¼in (3cm), dc2tog 3 times, cut the yarn and use the end to sew up the remaining hole.
LEAVES (make 5)
Ch 14, ss in 2nd ch from hook, 2 dc, 2 htr, 2 tr, 2 dtr, 1 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc, 1 ss. Working along the other side of the foundation ch without turning: 1 ch, miss first st, 1dc. 1 tr, 1 htr, 2 dtr, 2 tr, 2 htr, 1 dc, 1 ss.
Fasten off. Weave in the ends at the points of the leaves. Use the yarn end at the base of the leaf to sew them around the stalk.
Embroider yellow ‘v’ stitches at the base of each tr2tog PR. Carry the yarn at the back of the work from stitch to stitch from top to bottom of the hat and it will not affect the sideways stretch of the hat.
