Important tips before you start crocheting your Christmas tree skirt!

Tension is not critical, but it may affect the yarn quantities required

This tree Skirt pattern is worked in rows from the top edge. All front post treble crochet (FPtr) stitches are worked into the front post treble crochet (FPtr) stitches 2 rows below. If you’re new to these stitches, you should check out our how to crochet post stitches tutorial.

The tree skirt is placed around the base of a tree without fastenings, but you could add 1cm buttons down one side edge and fasten through the spaces between the stitches.

How big will your finished skirt be?

Your finished crochet Christmas tree skirt will measure approximately 50cm (19¾in) in circumference around top and 44cm (17¼in) tall.

What you need to crochet your Christmas tree skirt

You will need:

  • Crochet hook ((US size H/8)) (5mm)
  • Red (167) Cygnet Chunky yarn (100% acrylic, 100g/156m) (8 balls)
  • Stitch markers

Step 1

Setting up your starting point

Your first two rows are made a bit differently to how you might expect, thanks to some clever reverse dc stitches you won’t need to turn at the end of these two rows.

Chain (ch) 48.
Row 1 (RS) Double crochet (dc) in second ch from hook and each ch across, do not turn. [47 sts]
Row 2 (RS) Ch1, reverse dc in front loop (fl) of each stitch (st) across, do not turn.

Step 2

From this point onward, you will turn at the end of each row.

Row 3 Ch1, dc in back loop (bl) of each st across, turn.
Row 4 Ch1, dc in each st across, turn.

Step 3

Stitch markers at the ready – we’re going to start adding those fancy post stitches in this next step!

Row 5 Ch1, dc in first st, (dc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, place marker (pm) in last st, dc in next 2 sts) 9 times, dc in final st, turn.

Move the markers up as you work.

Row 6 Ch1, (dc in each st to marker, FPtr in st 2 rows below, skip marked st, move marker to FPtr) repeat (rep) across, turn.

Row 7 Ch1, (dc in each st across to marker, 2dc in marked st) rep across to end, turn. [56 sts]

Row 8 Ch1, *dc in each st to marked st, 2FPtr around FPtr 2 rows below, skip marked st, move marker to first FP st of 2-FPtr group; rep from * across to end, turn. [65 sts]
