Cloud cardigans are all the fashion at that moment and we’ve seen them sold in high street shops up and down the country. We absolutely love them – but why buy when you can DIY?

Lucy Djevdet is here to teach you how to crochet cloud appliqués. These sweet little clouds are super simple to hook up and can be used to customise all sorts of clothing. They’re perfectly sized for cardigans.

If you're not a big fan of cardigans don’t worry. You can use this crochet cloud appliqué pattern for anything you like. Add them to a crochet blanket, turn them into earrings… the world's your oyster!

How to make crochet cloud appliqué

Things you need to know before you start crocheting!

Tension is not important for this project! Each one of your cloud appliqué will measure approximately 10cm (4") wide by 4cm (1⅝") high.

Each cloud is made up of three rounds; the first two rounds use Yarn A and the third round uses Yarn B. Once you have completed the cloud, use the plastic-headed pins to block them (stretch them into shape). Spray lightly with water and leave to dry.

What you need to crochet your cloud appliqué

You will need:

  • Knitcraft Cotton Blend Plain DK – 50% cotton/50% acrylic (100g/215m per ball; 1 ball in White (Yarn A))
  • Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake Chunky –100% polyester (100% polyester, 50g/124m per ball; 1 ball in Milky White 0200 (Yarn B))

Step 1

Using the 3.5mm crochet hook and Yarn A, chain (ch) 15

Step 2

Round 1 Double crochet (dc) into the second ch from the hook, dc in each of the next 12 stitches (sts), 3dc in last st, turn the piece 180° to work along the underside of your foundation ch, dc in each of the next 12 sts, do not join [28dc]

Step 3

Round 2 10 treble crochet (tr) in the ch you missed at the start of Round 1, miss next st (the first dc of the last round), slip stitch (ss) in each of the next 3 sts, 8 half treble crochet (htr) in next st, miss next st, ss in each of the next 2 sts, 8dtr in next st, miss next st, ss in each of the next 3 sts, 10tr in next st, miss next st, ss in next st, dc in each of the next 12 sts, ss to top of first tr from round to join.
Fasten off yarn but leave a tail of approx. 10cm (4”) – you will use this later to sew your cloud onto your cardigan or jumper [20tr, 8htr, 8dtr, 9ss, 12dc]

Step 4

Round 3 using 4mm crochet hook, join Yarn B to the first tr from the previous round, work 1dc in each htr, tr, double treble crochet (dtr) and dc around and ss in each st around, ss in the first st to join.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Step 5

Use the pins to block each cloud. Spray them lightly with water and allow them to dry completely – this will help to maintain their shape.
