Before you begin

You will need:

  • Cross stitch (Your finished cross stitch design on aida or linen)
  • Fabric (To back your cross stitch)
  • Fabric (For the stocking lining)
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine

Step 1

Cut your stitching into a stocking shape, leaving 1.5cm (¾in) border of aida as a seam allowance. Use this as a template to cut a piece of backing fabric and two pieces of lining fabric the same size.

Step 2

Take one of the pieces of lining fabric and pin to the stitched piece, with right sides together. Sew together along the top edge, using 1.5cm (¾in) seam allowance. To make the back of the stocking, pin the remaining piece of lining fabric to the backing fabric, with right sides together, then sew along the top edge using 1.5cm (¾in) seam allowance.

Step 3

Pin the front and back of your stocking together, with right sides facing, then sew around the edge using 1.5cm (¾in) seam allowance, leaving the top of the stocking open. Trim your seam allowance and clip notches into the curves so it lies flat.

Step 4

Turn your stocking through to the right side and sew a length of cord around the edge of the stocking, finishing with a loop for hanging.
