Mid century modern is a trend that's here to stay. Its origins lie in the 1940s, but we can still see the aesthetic ripple through many homes today. The style embraces sleek simplicity, focusing on airy, bright spaces with plenty of light, paired with pops of colour that won’t overwhelm the space.

We’re not sure exactly what makes this style so popular, but we can see why it is. It has a beautiful mixture of elegance and fun. It’s not cluttered, but it’s not boring either – perhaps it's this balance that has allowed it to stand the test of time.

Let’s find out a bit more about this timeless look, and learn how you can design your own mid century modern living room.

What is mid century modern style?

Mid century modern emerged from post-WWII tastes and flourished from the 1940s to the 1960s. This design embraces functional simplicity, highlighting natural materials like wood and organic shapes with a focus on wood panelling.

It pairs neutral colour palettes with vibrant pops of colour, often introduced through statement pieces like sofas or armchairs. Geometric and abstract patterns are also common and featured in artwork or sculptures.

What’s the difference between mid century modern and modern?

Mid century modern spotlights styles and trends from a specific period in the past, while modern design evolves with the times, reflecting the present and future rather than the past. Mid century modern aims for a timeless look, creating something that can be appreciated across the decades.

The key components of a mid century modern living room

Minimalism and space

As we’ve mentioned, space is a big part of mid century modern. Making the most of space, even in smaller rooms, can make a big difference.

A great way to achieve this is to use height to your advantage. Choose items that are low to the floor, like a low sofa or chair, and pair them with taller items that can be dotted around the room like tall floor lamps, plants or floating shelves.

In this great example from Ikea, we see a large low sofa in a solid colour that draws the eye, while other elements, such as the shelves and climbing plants, create the impression of high ceilings. The design focuses on drawing the eye to different levels of the room’s height, which opens up the space, rather than keeping everything on one level, which can create a closed-in feeling.

The fun part! Pops of colour throughout the room are a great way to brighten up your space without overwhelming it. You have two different options here: you can go bold with furniture, or you can create a feature wall.

In the wonderful example above, you’ll see pops of colour, wood panelling, and a sense of balance at play. The mustard yellow sofa adds a vibrant splash of colour and rich retro vibes, while the pine green paint, paired with natural wood panelling, creates a brilliant sense of harmony in the room.

Natural shapes and form

A big part of mid century is naturally shaped furnishings, which means shelves with rounded edges, record cabinets and side tables. We’d recommend hitting your local charity shop or antique shop for a bargain.

Look out for wood like walnut or dark walnut and teak for a truly vintage-inspired look. We love this coffee table from CraftsWoodGermany on Etsy. Each one is handmade, so will be unique to you, and it’s available in a variety of wood types, so you can find the one that suits your space.

Geometric and abstract patterns

When looking at inspiration you’ll often see the use of geometric shapes and abstract patterns throughout mid century modern decor. The best way to incorporate these styles is in items like rugs, throws, pillows or artwork. This adds visual interest without overwhelming the space.

A rug is a big part of the room and can bring it together. If you already have a strong colour palette throughout the room, opt for a subtle solid shade with a pattern like the one below.

Mid century modern embraces natural textiles, so look out for furnishings which are handmade with natural fibres. This one is handmade from natural wool giving it a soft luxurious feel.

Mid century modern living room accent lighting

Lighting in mid century modern design embraces both style and practicality. Arc lamps are a perfect example of this. With their striking design, they not only add height to the room but will arc over sofas or chairs to use as a reading light.

This one from Argos is a brilliant example. It’s made from a brassy gold-coloured metal, rounded in shape and stands over two metres tall – an impactful addition to your living room.

Low-hanging ceiling lamps are also a good option, in particular pendant lights. These are dome-shaped or globe pendants made from materials like metal, glass, or wood.

This one from John Lewis is a sleek addition and is available in several retro colours.

Mid century modern statement artwork

Like rugs, statement artwork can bring a room together and serve as a focal point. Mid century modern artwork uses geometric shapes, abstract forms and natural textiles.

This artwork by FGArtStudioDesign on Etsy is stunning – the artist uses earth tones and 3D texture to create a striking painting. It embodies many traits of mid century modern with its natural look, retro orange tones and use of organic texture.
