Get creative with bedroom curtains

While many people love the simplicity and style of roller or Venetian blinds, curtains can do much more than just block out light – they can also help to soften the room, and a thick pair of curtains can also help to block out draughts.

If you’ve already got a busy room or plenty of patterns, solid colour curtains can complement the room and will help to frame your window when they’re open. That said, patterned curtains can also make a great feature, especially if you have a particularly large window to cover.

Curtains can get expensive though, especially ones made with luxury fabrics. But you can use whatever fabrics you desire and save money by learning How to make curtains with Gathered.

Fall in love with a four-poster bed

four poster bed

There’s nothing quite as opulent as a four-poster bed, and they’re becoming increasingly popular when made in a modern style.

Gone are the days of thick mahogany pillars and enclosed curtains. Today’s modern four-poster beds tend to be sleek and minimal, merely hinting at the shape and helping to define your bed as a distinct space.

You can find a range of four poster beds available to buy online, or you could opt to make your own using this DIY four poster bed tutorial from TheSimpleFarmhouse.com

Small master bedroom ideas

If you only have a small master bedroom, the lack of space may limit your decor options. Here’s some top tips for small spaces:

  • A mural or patterned wallpaper can be overwhelming in a small room, instead opt for framed prints or even a solid coloured feature wall.
  • Clutter will be more obvious in a small room, so look for ways to maximise your storage – an ottoman storage bench or under-bed storage can be ideal for hiding things away.
  • Choose lighter paint colours - dark colours in a small room can make it feel oppressive or claustrophobic, so opt for lighter colours that will help to make the most of any natural light.
  • Pick furniture that fits the size of your room. That huge vintage wardrobe might indeed be lovely, but it’s no use if it takes up half the room.

Create a mural bedroom feature wall

Adding a mural can completely transform a room and transport you to a whole other world. You don’t need to hire an artist to come in and paint for days, mural wallpapers are readily available and there’s so many designs to choose you’re sure to find the perfect style for your master bedroom.

When choosing a mural, it’s important to consider both your room's existing colour scheme and vibe as well as the effect the mural has on you.

Murals that depict vistas and landscapes can make you feel as if you’re in nature and have a calming effect, but be careful not to pick anything too busy or distracting for the bedroom.

Darker-toned murals can help to create a good environment for relaxation and sleeping, but you need to be mindful of how this will work with the rest of your decor.

Transform your bedroom with wooden panels

If you haven’t noticed that wooden panelling is all the rage right now, then where have you been?

It’s a technique that really helps to complement large areas of plain walls, and is surprisingly simple to fit yourself. Don’t think you have to cover the entire wall in wood either, most kits just use pre-mitred mouldings to give the look of a panel.

Traditional panels are often used across a whole wall, or just the bottom half to create a divide. You can create dramatic feature walls using slat panels or create lovely textured walls using reclaimed wood.

Choose the right bedroom lighting

Good lighting is the key to a cosy space, and the wrong choice of bulb or lampshade can make a room feel stark and uninviting.

If you’re mostly relying on your main light, choose a bulb with a warm tone. Match it with a lampshade that gently diffuses the light rather than restricting it or focussing it into one specific spot.

However, you may prefer to create a cosy ambience using lamps, as they’re a great way of curating the light to suit your needs. For example, you may want a bedside lamp that is clear and bright enough to read by, but also use a floor lamp to help create a comfy warming glow.

Don’t be afraid to play with patterns and textures

Using bold patterns or colours has traditionally been a bit of a faux pas when considering how to decorate a master bedroom – but tradition isn’t always right!

Maximalist style isn’t for everyone, but different patterns and textures can be used to add character to a bedroom. It’s all about balance – show off patterned furniture or soft furnishings against solid-coloured walls and floors, or vice versa.

Be careful though – go too wild and all those patterns could be distracting when you’re trying to go to sleep. If you’re wary, try experimenting with patterns that have complementary colour schemes.

Make a bold move with bedroom paint colours

Adding a feature wall or patterns can make a big impact, but you can also make a big difference with solid colours, especially if you get creative with where you use them!

This Pink painted ceiling featured on YourHomeStyle.uk is a great example and one that many people would be afraid to try. We all think to paint our walls, but when you’re lying in bed at night unable to sleep, that nasty artex ceiling can be a depressing sight.

If you’re feeling really brave, you can also try adding colour to doors or non-pvc window frames for a bold block of colour. However, it’s wise to try tester paint pots first before committing to a bold colour, and keep in mind that the darker you go the more coats it will take to cover up if you don’t like it!

Choose the right prints for your master bedroom decor

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to artwork, but what may work beautifully in your living room could have an entirely different result in the bedroom.

When choosing artwork for the bedroom, look for pieces that make you feel calm rather than just going with your favourite paintings – you may love portrait paintings, but those eyes staring back at you when you can’t sleep might not help matters.

Instead, choose prints with relaxing colour combinations or abstract designs that aren’t going to be too distracting.
