Best for a pattern-tastic transformation
If you've ever tried self-adhesive wallpaper or tile decals, you will already be onboard with this idea. It's straightforward but you'll need plenty of patience and a wallpaper smoother tool to ensure you remove any pesky air bubbles.
Remember to measure carefully too and leave a little extra vinyl wrap all the way around to be cut off neatly with a sharp knife once the contact paper is in position. This will make sure your finish is as neat and professional-looking as possible.

2. Tint wooden worktops for a contemporary look
Best for existing wooden worktops
Wooden worktops are the classic choice, tapping into that Cottagecore vibe that's still going strong.
They are brilliant for islands, giving a warm, welcoming feel to a kitchen. But they are prone to water damage and the area around the back of the sink is particularly vulnerable - think black staining, which is hard to ignore.
You'll need to sand your worktops to remove the top layers until the black staining has completely gone. Then use a tinted oil or wax to add a waterproof coating.
You can choose from a range of shades to make your wooden worktops appear darker such as cherry or walnut if you fancy. This may help to disguise any future staining too.
3. Transform countertops with porcelain tiles
Best for lovers of a bespoke look
Tiles don't have to be just for your kitchen splashback. In fact, they are one of the most versatile ways to upgrade your countertops thanks to their durability - tick! Myriad options - tick! Covetable style that's packed with personality - tick, tick, tick!
They're easy to clean and maintain. Though of course you'll need to check individual tile specs as some will be more porous and vulnerable to heat than others.
Porcelain tiles are the most hardwearing and if you choose vitrified porcelain any chips or cracks will be less noticeable. They are also less likely to stain.
4. Refresh your worktops with a lick of paint
Best for a super-quick fix
Usually reserved for cupboards and drawers, you can actually paint your worktops too. Who knew?! You can paint laminate or wooden worktops with a product that's suitable for your surface, such as water-based acrylic paint or chalk paint.
To help the paint adhere to the surface, lightly sand it first, then clean thoroughly to remove any dust and grit. Use a small roller to get a smooth and even finish. Et voila!
5. Overlay your worktops with quartz
Best for those with a little bit more to spend
OK, this isn't a DIY job but it's still much cheaper than completely replacing your worktops.
There are a number of companies who will measure up and cut granite or quartz to fit over the top of your existing countertops. It's so good, no one would ever know what's hiding underneath! And whether you have an inset or Belfast sink, the overlay will fit beautifully around it for a seamless finish.
You will need a stable and level countertop as a base so this is something to consider if thinking about overlays. If this is in place then you're good to go!
