Our review

This sturdy stand is ideal for avid crafters seeking a long-lasting addition to their craft space. Its adjustable clamps are perfect for accommodating small to large cross stitch and embroidery projects and keeps them sturdy while they’re being worked on. The Goufa is a game-changer for those who spend a long time stitching a lot as it takes away the ache from your hands when gripping a hoop for long periods of time. The desk set-up is beneficial for people who suffer from back or neck pain from long periods of being hunched over when working on a project. Additionally, the double-sided clasps make the hoop very stable for those of you who are skilled enough to stitch using both hands!

How we tested:

I evaluated five key categories of this embroidery stand: adjustability and stability, ease of use, portability and durability, functionality and value for money.

Firstly, I tested the stand’s ability to hold a range of wooden and plastic standard round embroidery hoops, ranging in size from 8-28cm. I also tested a 28cm hand-quilting hoop with a thickness of 2cm.

I also took into account various factors, including the range of height adjustments and angles, ease of assembly and operation, ergonomic design, weight and storage convenience, build quality and overall compatibility.

Lastly, I took into account the price and overall value for money to determine the final score.

Adjustability and stability - 4/5

The Guofa Adjustable Embroidery Table Stand has a simple yet functional design. The height is set at 20cm above the table surface and is not adjustable – however, there is 360° rotation allowing the angle of the hoop to be set in whatever position you feel most comfortable.

Once assembled, adjustments can be made to the width of the columns which allows for different sized hoops to be used.

The top knobs can be loosened and tightened to adjust the clasps which hold the sides of the hoop being worked on. The clasps can hold a hoop with a depth of 8mm to a maximum of 2cm in width.

To adjust the angle of the hoop simply turn the knobs on either side to tighten and loosen the screw – this will allow the clasps to rotate so you can angle the hoop to your liking and also easily access the back of the hoop.

During use, the frame is very stable as the hoop is secured with clamps on both sides and the arms are directly connected to a strong and sturdy base. The hoop really doesn’t move unless you want it to.

Because of the adjustably of the columns, it can securely hold any hoop size between 8cm (3”) diameter to 28cm (11”) diameter.

Ease of use 3/5

The Guofa Adjustable Embroidery Table Stand requires assembly, and the instructions provided are minimal with just a single diagram to demonstrate where each component should be arranged. However, it was pretty straight forward, and I didn’t find it too difficult to put together.

Adjusting the column widths is a little fiddly as the stand needs to be placed on its side for access to the bottom of the base – then the ‘L’ shaped screwdriver (provided) is then used to partially loosen the screw which allows for movement along a runner. Once in the desired position is found, the screw is then retightened to fix the column in place.

The top knobs are used to loosen/tighten the clasps which will hold the sides of the hoop – I found this to be relatively easy but may be more difficult if you have mobility difficulties.

Likewise, the knobs used to adjust angle of the hoop works well but may be a bit tricky to use for people who suffer from conditions such as grip strength limitations.

Setting up the frame can be fiddley initially and quite time-consuming to deconstruct if you wish to store it back in the box. I would recommend keeping it assembled for ease of use.

Once set up in your desired configuration it is extremely comfortable to use. With some other hoop stands I’ve used in the past I still felt like I needed to grip the hoop to stop it from wobbling, however, this model is completely stable therefore allowing both hands to be available for stitching.

Portability and durability 3/5

As the hoop stand is made of solid wood it is quite heavy – weighing in at 996g. Fully assembled with the arm attached the dimensions are 44L x 28W x 20H cm. Without the arm, they are 44L x 12W x 20H cm.

The stand does dismantle down to fit in its original box (measuring 45L x 13W x 5.5Hcm) however, I wouldn’t recommend it as one to use “on the go” due to its weight and the time it takes to assemble and dismantle. It’s best suited to a dedicated craft space where it can be stored on a shelf or off to one. It doesn’t come with a carry case.

The Main body of the stand is made of Beech wood. There are silicone non-slip pads on the base and the metal components made from nickel and stainless steel.

Overall, the Goufa Embroidery Table Stand has a robust design. I’ve had mine for about 2 years and it’s as good now as it was when I bought it.

Functionality 3/5

The stand can be used with any style of embroidery hoop, including thicker hand quilting hoops.

The wood has a smooth finish with no rough edges. It can be a bit tricky to wrangle when adjusting as some parts don’t always slide into position on the first try. The stand requires a bit of patience when adjusting but I think it’s worth it overall.

With the additional ability to easily rotate the hoop for easier access to the reverse of the work. Side knobs can be loosened to flip the hoop, flip it over and then retighten to tie off your threads at the back.

One of the more unique features of this stand is the pattern holder. This is a great addition for any cross stitcher as it holds your pattern so it’s both visible and accessible, whilst simultaneously keeping out of the way whilst you stitch. The pattern holder is also removable though, so it is perfect for a multi-crafter who may not want this feature when working an embroidery project.

Value for money 4/5

The Guofa Adjustable Embroidery Table Stand is under £40 which is affordable and in line with products of this nature. The addition of the pattern holder is an added feature which increases its value for money.

This feels like a quality item made of solid wood, that will last for years if treated properly.

What’s in the box:

  • Base with silicone pads
  • Base screws x2
  • Galvanised gaskets x2
  • Columns x2
  • Wooden clasp splints (top and bottom) x 2
  • Wooden knobs x4
  • Pattern stand rod
  • Pattern stand board
  • Pegs x2
  • Pattern stand screw
  • L shaped screw driver

Our verdict: Should you buy the Guofa Adjustable Embroidery Table Stand?

I personally love this product despite its limitations. It is comfortable to use for stitching over long periods of time and allows users to sew using both hands for super speedy stitching.

My favourite elements are that it allows easy access to the reverse of the hoop that is being worked on so a neat and tidy finish can be achieved. The handy pattern holder is great for keeping desks clear and reduces neck strain from looking down at a pattern whilst stitching.

It is a little tricky to make adjustments whilst mounting the hoop, but once set up it’s very stable and reliable, which is something I value for achieving a neat and quick finish. I would also recommend this to a crafter who likes their hoop to be firmly fixed in place or who wants to have both hands available whilst stitching.

Summary

The Guofa Adjustable Embroidery Table Stand is a sturdy, robust and reliable stand suitable for desk or table crafting. Although heavy and a bit cumbersome to use, its durable construction ensures it can securely hold a wide variety of hoop sizes. With the bonus feature of a pattern holder, it comes in at a reasonable price and would be a worthwhile addition to any craft space.
