When it comes to the world of yarn, there's so much to choose from. However, there are a few areas that can cause confusion, and one of the biggest culprits has got to be fingering yarn! It's another classic case of different countries using different names for the same yarn weight.
As a general rule, what our friends in the US call fingering yarns is the same as what we in the UK call 4ply weight yarn. Because this weight is one of the best yarns for socks and baby projects, it may also be referred to as sock yarn or baby yarn too.

While in the UK we will commonly refer to fingering weight yarn as 4ply yarn, it's worth noting that 4ply can technically also be used to refer to a yarn's construction. Yarns are often made of multiple strands spun (or plied) together – so it's possible that you might have a yarn that is spun with 4 strands, which could technically be described as 4ply, but that is actually not a 4ply weight yarn!
Similarly, a fingering yarn could technically be described as 2ply if it only uses 2 strands. However, this is getting into the real technical details of things – if a yarn is ever describing itself as 4ply (or labelled as such on websites), you can be 99.9% sure that they're talking about the yarn weight and not the construction.
You might also see yarns described as sport weight, which is slightly heavier/thicker than 4ply but lighter/thinner than DK. Most people will generally treat them like a 4ply weight yarn, but as always you'll want to to check your tension to make sure you're obtaining the correct size with your knitting or crochet stitches.
Similarly, you might also come across 'light fingering' weight yarns, which are as you'd guess – thinner/lighter than typical fingering yarns, but not as fine as lace/thread weight yarns.
If you're ever in doubt, you can always check out our guide to choosing the best yarn for more advice. You can also look for the Craft Yarn Council symbols, which for 4ply yarns/fingering yarns will normally be the number 2 yarn weight symbol, although some can verge into the number 1 symbol too.
You can also use the hook or needle size as a guideline – 4ply yarns/fingering yarns will generally use a crochet hook that is between 2.25mm and 3.75mm in size.
